Transportation Options from Philadelphia International Airport to ICHEP
The R1 High Speed Rail Line runs from the airport and makes stops at both University City Station, at the edge of the Penn Campus, and 30th Street Station (the main train station in Philadelphia.) You enter the airport train stations from the pedestrian bridges over the airport roadway. The fare is $6.00 one-way, and the ride takes about 18 minutes.
Walking Directions to ICEP registration from University City Station: Take the stairs up to Spruce Street (direction away from Airport). Turn left onto Spruce St., go past the University Museum, and you will see the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania across the street on your left. Houston Hall is a large gray stone building in the middle of the block opposite the hospital.
TAXI Service
Taxi service from the airport to Center City hotels and The Inn at Penn and the Sheraton University City is convenient if you have luggage. The flat fare from the airport to the University City area is $29.00; there is a $1.00 per additional person surcharge. Gratuity is not included in the fee. (The customary gratuity is 15%.)
CAR RENTAL
Unless you are planning on traveling outside Philadelphia, you will probably not need a car. Parking in the city can be difficult and parking tickets are expensive. Telephones for all on-site car rental agencies are located in the baggage claim areas of all terminals. Please note that you will need to have a valid drivers' license, and both collision and liability insurance. Be advised that some car rental agencies will not rent to anyone under 25 years of age. Transportation Options from Liberty International Airport (EWR) Newark, New Jersey to Philadelphia
Car Rental Agencies Same agencies as Philadelphia International Airport. Same rules apply, except you should note that you will be driving the car out of state. The agency will provide a map and directions to Philadlephia, or see driving directions, below.
TRAINS
AirTrain Newark provides monorail service between the three EWR terminals and to EWR Station. Both Amtrak and New Jersey (NJ) Transit trains depart to Philadelphia from this station.
Buy tickets for trains to Philadelphia at the airport end of AirTrain or at the EWR Station.
Amtrak: (Recommended) This train is relatively speedy (one hour.) One-way tickets cost $50-$70. These trains have reserved seating.

New Jersey Transit: This option involves local trains. The travel time is more than two hours including a change at Trenton to a SEPTA (Southeast Pennsylvania Transit Authority) train.
Cost is about $20.
Arriving in Philadelphia by train:
Both Amtrak and SEPTA trains stop at 30th Street Station, the main train station in Philadelphia.
Transportation from 30th Street Station to Hotels and ICHEP Registration:
TAXI A metered cab costs approximately $6.00 excluding gratuity (normally 15%). The ride to the Penn Campus (or the Sheraton University City or the Inn at Penn) takes approximately 5 minutes. Taxis are readily available, and may be the best option for travelers with luggage.
BUS The SEPTA No. 30 Bus runs from 30th St. station to the Penn Campus. The fare is $2.00. Exact change is required. The ride takes 8 minutes and stops at Civic Center Boulevard and University Avenue. LUCY (see below) also runs from the station to the Penn Campus during the day. RAIL From 30th Street Station, take the R1, R2, or R3 railroad lines for one stop to University City Station. (Not recommended.) See walking directions from University City Station to ICHEP registration under SEPTA above.
ON FOOT The campus and hotels are less than a 15 minute walk from 30th Street Station.
After leaving the station, walk west on Market Street, away from Center City and the tall buildings.
Turn left onto 34th Street, and walk south to Chestnut Street and turn right for Sheraton University City Hotel (one block) – or --
Continue on 34th Street, and turn right onto Walnut Street for the Inn at Penn (<3 blocks) – or --
Continue on 34th Street, and turn right onto Spruce Street for Houston Hall, 3417 Spruce Street, and ICHEP registration.
Departure Note
If you are returning to Liberty International Airport via train, get off at the EWR stop. Do not go on to the Newark city train station. The city station is not near the airport, and cabs can be difficult to obtain.

Driving to ICHEP and the Penn Campus
N.B. On-street metered parking is available, but limited to two or three hours. Cost is $.25 for fifteen minutes. Parking violations will result in tickets. Cars may also be towed if parked illegally. Parking lots and garages are available nearby with rates from $12 to $20 per day.
From the North
Take I-95 South to I-676 West toward Center City, Philadelphia. From I-676 take "exit only" ramp to I-76 East, toward the Philadelphia International Airport. (This exit is less than two miles from your entry point on I-676.) Proceed less than a mile to Exit 346A, South Street. Exit 346A is a LEFT LANE EXIT. Turn right onto South Street to enter campus. South Street becomes Spruce Street. Proceed to Houston Hall, 3417 Spruce Street, and ICHEP registration.
From New Jersey and the Northeast
Take the New Jersey Turnpike to exit 4 for Route 73 North. Proceed on Route 73 North to I-295 South. From I-295 South, take exit 26 or I-76 West. Cross over to Philadelphia via the Walt Whitman Bridge. This section of I-76 is also called the Schulykill Expressway. Take exit 346A for South Street, and turn left onto South Street to enter campus. Note: Exit 346 A is a LEFT LANE EXIT. South Street becomes Spruce Street. Proceed to Houston Hall, 3417 Spruce Street, for ICHEP registration. Parking lots are also available.
From the Northeast Extension, Pennsylvania Turnpike
Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Northeast Extension (I-476) to the Pennsylvania Turnpike East-West Interchange. Remain on I-476. (The Northeast Extension terminates at the East-West Interchange.) Continue south on I-476 approximately 3.6 miles to Exit 6, I-76 East (Schuylkill Expressway). Take I-76 east approximately 12.6 miles to Exit 346A, South Street, Exit 346A is a LEFT LANE EXIT. Turn right onto South Street to enter campus. South Street becomes Spruce Street. Proceed to Houston Hall, 3417 Spruce Street and ICHEP registration.
From the Northwest
Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Exit 24, Valley Forge Interchange. Take I-76 East (Schuylkill Expressway) approximately 17 miles to Exit 346A, South Street. Exit 346A is a LEFT LANE EXIT. Turn right onto South Street to enter campus. South Street becomes Spruce Street. Proceed to Houston Hall, 3417 Spruce Street and ICHEP registration.
From the South
Take I-95 North to Exit 13 which is marked "291 West to I-76”. Follow 291 West across the Platt Bridge to 26th Street, which leads directly onto I-76 West (Schuylkill Expressway.) Take I-76 West about 3 miles to Exit 346A, South Street, which EXITS ON THE LEFT. Turn left onto South Street to enter campus. South Street becomes Spruce Street. Proceed to Houston Hall, 3417 Spruce Street and ICHEP registration.
GETTING AROUND PHILADELPHIA DURING ICHEP
N.B. All conference locations are within easy walking distance of one another. There will be ICHEP bus service between Houston Hall and the Philadelphia Art Museum buffet banquet on Sunday, August 3.
Public Transportation Via SEPTA (SouthEast Pa. Transport. Auth.)
Fare is $2.00 for buses, subways and trolleys. Transfers are $.75 and must be purchased when boarding the first vehicle. You must have exact change in cash or token.
To and from Center City
N.B. Getting around Center City itself is easy. Streets are laid out in a grid pattern. From City Hall, you can walk just about anywhere in Center City in 30 minutes or less.
Bus
Take buses marked 42, 21, or 40. Catch the 40 on Spruce Street, the 42 on 33rd Street, and the 21 on Chestnut Street. For return to Penn, catch the 21 or 42 anywhere on Walnut Street, or the 40 bus on Lombard Street.
Subway-Surface (Trolley)
Catch the trolley from 36th and Sansom Streets or 37th and Spruce Street. Take any eastbound car to get to Center City. To return to Penn, catch Route 11, 13, 24, or 36 trolley.
Subway (The El)
The Market-Frankford subway line runs along Market Street and stops at 30th, 34th and 40th Streets. Take eastbound trains for Center City and westbound trains to return to Penn.
TAXIS
Taxicab services are available on the Penn campus, at the Inn at Penn and Sheraton University City hotels, outside the Hospital entrance on 34th St. near Houston Hall or by calling the cab company directly. In Center City, cabs are usually available at tourist locations. Rates are calculated both on mileage and wait time. Fares do not include gratuity. A 15 percent tip is customary. Allow 30 minutes for pick up service.

Other Transportation Options
Philly Phlash is a purple trolley that runs throughout Center City Philadelphia, every ten to fifteen minutes stopping at 20 locations including the Philadelphia Zoo. The entire loop takes about an hour. The Phlash will take you to or near major tourist attractions . It runs daily from 10 am to 6 pm. An all-day family pass costs $10.00 (Individual pass is $4.00). Tickets can be purchased at the Independence Visitor's Center at 6th and Market Streets.
The Loop through University City (LUCY) makes multiple stops around the Penn campus and serves 30th Street Station. Hours are from 6:10 am -6:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
